Eric Liddell refused to run in the 100m at the Paris Olympics in 1924 because the heats took place on a Sunday. He went on to win gold in the 400m and bronze in the 200m. The Oscar winning film, ‘Chariots of Fire’, recounts these events.
Following his Olympic success, Eric quit athletics and became a missionary in China. He eventually died in a Japanese internment camp in 1945.
